Escape rooms are an exciting way to spend an afternoon with friends or family. But, if you’re trying an escape room for the first time, there are a few things that you should know before you go! Let’s check out some escape room tips to make sure that you get the most out of your first escape room experience.
Assemble (and get to know) Your Dream Team
If you’re visiting an escape room for the first time, be sure to assemble a team of people with complementary skills. Ensure that you’re all ready for a challenge and are willing to openly communicate to solve the problem together. If you’re a corporate escape room team, communicate ahead of time that everyone’s opinions are valued, regardless of the positions that you have at the office.
Choose the Right Theme for the Team
The team should read about and vote on the escape room theme to prevent any confusion on the day of. Be sure to take note of both the theme and the difficulty level. Ensure that everyone’s opinion around the room choice is heard. If possible, everyone should be able to feel connected and engaged with the theme - especially if it’s your first escape room experience! Our Peterborough escape room company, Lift Lock Escape, offers a Batman-themed room that may interest superhero or comic fans!
Make your Reservation Ahead of Time
If there is an escape room theme that your team is passionate about, be sure to book ahead and reserve the time and date. The easiest way is to visit our online booking page and make your reservation. Alternatively, you can send us an email or give us a call to help you with your booking.
Dress Appropriately for the Experience
It is generally advised to dress comfortably for your escape room experience. You will be on your foot for an hour or so and will be quite busy, which may make you feel warmer than usual. Also, you may need to step on things, occasionally climb a ladder, or crawl. Our Peterborough escape room location, Lift Lock Escape, offers a historic walking escape room in the downtown core for which you need to dress for the weather. If you’re a corporate escape room team who is headed to the experience during or after working hours, it may be a good idea for the staff to bring clothes to change into or are prepared to enter the escape room in their business attire.
We do have lockers and coat hangers, so we're well-prepared to accommodate you if you need to store some extra clothes.
Listen to the Briefing
Immediately prior to your first escape room experience, teams will often receive a briefing from the staff member at the escape room.
It is incredibly important to listen to their rules and the scenario. There may even be details in the briefing that you’ll need to solve the escape room. Be sure to listen carefully to your game master (and if you’re given a help/panic option, understand how to activate that too).
Remember to focus on the fun!
Winning is great – but having fun is better. Remind your team members that you’re all there to have fun and enjoy the time that you’re spending together. Deescalate any hypercompetitive attitudes on the team prior to entering the escape room to prevent conflict. Corporate escape room participants should also focus on the fun and team-bonding potential versus winning. Be sure that you and your team set realistic expectations for one another and enjoy your first escape room experience as it is happening!
